Getting Started at FVTC

Under 2013 Assembly Bill 201, degree-seeking student Veterans and service members may qualify for early enrollment depending on the condition of their military discharge. Students using Veteran education benefits will be identified for early enrollment accordingly. Students not using Veteran education benefits must contact FVTC Veterans Services and submit proper documentation to apply for early enrollment.

2.0 Cumulative GPA Requirement:

Beginning in January 2014, any student using the Wisconsin G.I. Bill, whether it be the Veteran, the spouse or the child of a Veteran, must maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher in order to remain eligible for the Wisconsin G.I. Bill benefits. Should a student using the Wisconsin G.I. Bill have a cumulative GPA that falls below the threshold of 2.0 at the end of a term, the student may still enroll the following term; however, they will not be able to use the Wisconsin G.I. Bill at that time. Should the student get their cumulative GPA back to a 2.0 or higher at the end of a non-qualifying term, the student will be re-certified for the subsequent term by the institution/school.

FVTC Veterans Services may request the following items for your file:

  • Federal Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
  • DD-214 (member 4 copy)
  • WDVA 2029 (if applying for the WI G.I. Bill)
  • Marriage Certificate (if spouse)
  • Birth Certificate (if dependent)
  • Service-connected disability rating papers (if applying for a benefit requiring a service-connected disability)

If you are using a federal benefit, it is crucial that you notify FVTC Veterans Services of future enrollments. We are required to certify your classes every semester. Failure to notify us of enrollment will result in non-payment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I have to verify my attendance to the VA every month?

Beginning Dec. 17, 2021, The Department of Veterans Affairs will require all Post 9/11 GI Bill® recipients to verify their enrollment every month. Call  1-877-823-2378 to verify enrollment and you will have the option to Opt-in for text verification for future verification.

Chapter 33 Students - The Cengage charge of $120.00 on your FVTC account is a digital resource that takes place of a traditional book. Since Post 9/11 (CH33) recipients receive a Book/Supply stipend from their VA benefits, The Cengage charge will be the responsibility of the student to pay.

Can I apply for Financial Aid if I am using my VA benefits?

Yes, you can, and we encourage all our VA student to apply. There are several types of financial aid to choose from; grants, scholarships and loans if necessary.

The only students who cannot take tuition specific financial aid are Post 9/11-ch 33 students. The reason is that the benefit already pays tuition cost. Stop into Student Financial Services, Room 118 for more information.

For Post 9/11 students

Beginning August 1, 2021, a new nationwide VA-Dual Certification regulation change exists. This means that we will be certifying twice for the semester. The first certification is to certify credits only to the VA. This certification will assist the VA in sending out the Book/ Supply stipends and BAH payments to students. The second certification will be started after census day, typically 10 days after the term starts. This second certification will be requesting tuition and fees.

You will receive a student bill until your Post 9/11 funds are applied to your account. Please note this will not negatively affect you or any changes you may need to make for the Fall term.

Non-tuition charges like Inclusive Access (digital books), $30 program application fee, etc. are generally not covered by VA benefits. You are responsible for making payment for those charges before you can enroll in next term's classes.
