The Scholars for Success program focuses on the retention and persistence of at-risk, low-income, multicultural students as well as other students who are part of marginalized populations. 

Scholars for Success evolved from the highly successful Brother-to-Brother program, which began in 2013. Brother-to-Brother supported the growing population of African American males at FVTC.  In 2014, the success of the program lead to the expansion to help additional marginalized students.

Through the Dare to Dream initiative, Fox Valley Technical College works to identify and help people who use the services of local non-profit agencies in the Fox Cities: Fox Cities Warming Shelter, Homeless Connections, COTS, Habitat for Humanity, Housing Partnership, Harbor House, Riverview Gardens, Step Industries, and LEAVEN. Our goal is to help them increase their economic self-sufficiency through the completion of their education.

These students may face significant barriers, including homelessness, hunger, lack of transportation, and lack of dependent care. Through individualized case management, we identify and address barriers to help the student navigate the admissions and enrollment process. We also guide them to the successful completion of their education goals, including completing their GED/HSED or a Fox Valley Technical College degree.

Many of these students have made previous attempts at returning to school, so the goal of the Dare to Dream initiative is to help them break the cycle of poverty by fostering stability and support.

The Cultural Support Specialist is a joint position between the Appleton Area School District and Fox Valley Technical College. Through an individualized case management approach, Cultural Support Specialists monitor and mentor students for academic enhancement and social success, as well as encouraging students to complete high school and pursue higher education.

Cultural Support Specialists:

• Provide direct communication with staff regarding students' cultural, academic and personal challenges while serving as a liaison between schools and families in order to address barriers to academic achievement
• Work to ensure equity and cultural understanding, while connecting students with the necessary resources needed for their success
• Help students and their families with the completion of college applications, arrange college tours, complete financial aid & scholarship applications, and develop culturally relevant workshops for staff and students

Camp H.E.R.O (Hmong Exploring Real Opportunities)

Camp H.E.R.O is designed specifically for Hmong students entering grades 6-8. Participants learn about careers through hands-on, interactive sessions such as digital fabrication, paralegal careers, public safety, aircraft piloting, culinary arts, advanced manufacturing, health care and many others. Students develop self-esteem and leadership skills through daily journaling, presentations, peer-to-peer contact, and a final graduation ceremony.

Camp LYT²E (Linking Youth to Technical Education)

This youth camp provides high-level exploration in technical education with a focus on campus engagement, representation, and includes culturally relevant practices. Camp LYT2E serves Black/African American 6th-10th graders enrolled in any of the 28 school districts served by Fox Valley Technical College. 

L.E.T.T.I.E. (Latinas Empowered Through Transformative Ideas in Education)

L.E.T.T.I.E. is designed for Hispanic girls entering grades 6-12. The camp helps participants see career options in a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs.

L.E.T.T.I.E.'s five-day camp offers academic improvement, career exploration and personal enrichment in order to close the achievement gap between Hispanic girls and their peers. L.E.T.T.I.E. camp gives these girls and their parents the necessary information, knowledge and confidence to envision college after high school. Participant's families are invited to participate in the full program, which includes tours of the college, sessions on financial aid and a graduation ceremony that recognizes the students' efforts.
