Emergency Weather Closings

College Philosophy on Weather Closings

Fox Valley Technical College will strive to remain open to serve students. If the weather is threatening and buildings stay open, the choice to report for an in-person class is ultimately up to the student. Driving conditions may vary across the wide geographical region served by FVTC. Every effort will be made to help the student make up educational experiences lost due to severe weather conditions. It is the student’s responsibility to contact his or her instructor(s) to make up missed assignments.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When will decisions about the college closing be made? Who makes these decisions?

If FVTC is going to close due to weather, the College will announce an Appleton/Oshkosh campus closing by 5:00 a.m. for day classes/activities and by 3:00 p.m. for evening classes/activities.

The decision on campus closings will be made by the College President and the Vice President for Finance & Facilities or their designee(s).

What about regional centers?

Because weather conditions can vary considerably across the district, regional center managers, after consultation with the Vice President for Finance & Facilities or his/her designee, will make the decision about closing a regional site. A plan for notification of students and staff will be in place at each site.

How will I be notified about the college closing?

Closing information will be provided to local television and radio stations.

It will also be broadcast on the College’s emergency mass notification system and social media channels.

What about my class?

Students and employees should assume that the college is open, classes are continuing as scheduled unless and until a specific announcement canceling classes is issued.

Virtual classes will proceed as scheduled when the buildings are closed. In person classes will be canceled but instructors may elect to conduct virtual learning activities instead.

When the campuses are closed, the buildings will be locked. Staff should not report to work on campus and students should not report to in person classes. Staff members who are not able to work remotely are eligible to use emergency leave.

For students who are involved with clinicals, internships and other work assignments, please communicate with your instructors and your supervisors on procedures in the event of closures and cancellations.

What if the college is open but I'm uncomfortable going out?

Fox Valley Technical College will strive to remain open to serve students. If the weather is threatening and campus buildings stay open, it is each student’s responsibility to decide whether to travel. Driving conditions may vary across the wide geographical region served by FVTC.

The college is educating students for the workplace, so our closing policy is much like a business or agency rather than that of K-12 school districts. If you are uncomfortable driving and decide to miss class, please communicate with your instructor, let them know, and inquire about make-up assignments. Instructors will vary on their policy; please ask and be prepared.
