Welcome to New Group of International Students

International students bring culture and perspective to the classroom

| By: Britten, Casey

As the semester kicks off, we’re welcoming 40 new students from around the world. The incoming group joins the 70 international students who are already studying at Fox Valley Technical College. In total, the 100+ students represent 35 countries.

“FVTC has worked with thousands of international students for the last 30 years and has built a strong reputation as a leader in international student programming,” says International Student Programs Manager Allisen Stojanovic. “International students come to FVTC specifically because of its outstanding reputation for academics and job placement. They want a hands-on education while learning about the American way of life. Plus, Appleton and Oshkosh are welcoming cities—safe and easy to navigate.”

On the flip side, local students benefit from the richness and diversity the international students bring to the college experience. “International students provide a unique opportunity for local technical college students to learn about other cultures, ways of life and perspectives, which they may not otherwise encounter,” Allisen says.

As part of their experience, FVTC’s international students host cultural presentations, musical performances, international movie nights and food tasting workshops throughout the year. “The students enjoy sharing their cultures and traditions and they know it is an important part of their experience in the United States,” Allisen explains. They also volunteer their time with community organizations, providing over 2000 hours of community service in the Fox Cities last year alone.

The new students for 2023-24 are coming from the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Gambia, Germany, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Africa, Timor Leste, Turkey, Vietnam and Zambia.

They are studying a wide variety of programs, including Business Management, Tourism, Hospitality, Electromechanical Technology, Cybersecurity, Early Childhood Education, Accounting, Global Studies, Neurodiagnostic Technology, Banking and Finance, Surgical Technology, Nursing, Baking & Pastry Management, and Welding.

Lekhotso Andrew Kopung is ready to get started. Originally from South Africa, he is here studying Cybersecurity. “The quality of the education skills that FVTC provides to students is one of main reasons why I am excited to study here,” he says. “The instructors are always there to help when we need them, that’s what I’ve realized in my first week of classes. The campus is so friendly, everyone is welcoming, always willing to help you. And Appleton is amazing!”
