FVTC effort helps women remove barriers to obtaining a license

| By: Daley-Hinkens, Carmelyn M

Graduation is just weeks away for 16 women who have completed the Starting Point program through Fox Valley Technical College. This free program, offered in Appleton, Oshkosh and virtually, helps eligible young women and single mothers build life skills that will position them well for college success and employment opportunities.

The curriculum for Starting Point focuses on such areas as self-esteem and mental health, career planning and healthy relationships. It offers the participants wrap-around services including counseling, advising, daycare, and now, helping some obtain a driver’s license.

FVTC student counselor Kara Nowak was recently interviewed by Spectrum News 1 about Success in Motion, the grassroots effort between FVTC and several partners to help women get their licenses. The group pulled together resources to cover every step of the licensing process, from basic lessons in the FVTC parking lot to behind-the-wheel practice around town to ultimately a driver’s test.

“What makes me most proud of this is that it’s not just us,” Kara explains. “It’s three or four other organizations – public, private, volunteer, non-profit organizations coming together to solve a problem that is doable.”
