Amber Evers earned a degree in Culinary Arts from Fox Valley Technical College in 2014, but decided to return to school to pursue a career in firefighting and paramedics. She is employed as a Captain with the Town of Clayton Fire and Rescue while she completes her degree.

Why did you choose this career program?

I chose the Fire Protection program because every day is a new adventure. You never know what you will do from one day to the next, but you are trained to be prepared for any situation. Paramedic school goes hand-in-hand with the Fire program because the majority of our calls are medical, so becoming a Paramedic will allow me to better serve my community.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?

We respond to a variety of different calls, but it is rewarding to know that when someone is possibly having the worst day of their lives they can rely on us to show up and give them the glimpse of hope they need. We will do everything in our power to improve the situation and assist them in any way we can.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?

We train with the same equipment we will use every day in the field. The instructors are very dedicated to both the program and their students, and will do everything in their power to make it the best learning environment for their students.

How has Fox Valley Technical College helped you change your life?

Fox Valley Technical College has opened many doors for me in career options. Most of the instructors are employed with their career choice outside of the college and are able to connect students with job opportunities directly that way.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?

With my education and training I plan to obtain a full-time firefighting position at one of the local fire departments.

In one sentence, what's your best advice for someone who's not sure they're ready for college?

My best advice would be to tour the campus and talk with some of the instructors and students in the career field you are interested in attending. They will be able to answer the majority of the questions you may have about getting started.
