Nursing Instructor’s Inspiring Wellness Journey Leads to ThedaCare Half Marathon

This year, Barbara Timmons, department chair of Nursing at FVTC, celebrated her 60th birthday feeling healthier and more energetic than she ever had in her 50s. For her, this milestone birthday wasn’t just about getting older—it was about embracing a new chapter of wellness, one she never thought possible just a few years ago.

Two years earlier, Barb wasn’t much of a walker, and the idea of doing any distance longer than a 5K seemed out of reach. She was more comfortable cheering on her husband during his Ironman races or supporting her son as he ran local races.

Despite the joy she found in being a spectator, something wasn’t right. Barb’s knees ached constantly, and her weight made it difficult to stay active for long periods of time.

By 2022, Barb reached a turning point—her left knee needed a total replacement. The surgery was tough, and the recovery process was even more challenging. However, with the help of a dedicated physical therapist, Barb found the motivation to change her life.

Her recovery began with short walks—just half a mile at first, then a full mile. With persistence, she slowly worked her way up, eventually participating in 5Ks and 10Ks, each race becoming a step forward in her fitness journey.

Barb has been preparing for her biggest challenge yet—the ThedaCare Half Marathon Run/Walk in the Fox Valley, taking place this weekend in Appleton.

For Barb, this half marathon isn’t about finishing quickly; it’s about celebrating how far she’s come, enjoying the company of friends and soaking in the community spirit.

All of us at FVTC are cheering Barb on as she takes on the ThedaCare Half Marathon Run/Walk!
