New GED-to-Work Program Gaining Steam

| By: Britten, Casey

A fresh initiative matches high-school credential seekers with rewarding careers at a local manufacturer. The GED-to-Work program gives students who are pursuing their GED an opportunity to work up to 20 hours a week at Pierce Manufacturing while receiving 15 hours of instruction taught by Fox Valley Tech instructors. The college’s Adult Basic Education department provides GED and HSED instruction to hundreds of students each year.

The program pays participants $15 an hour. Upon completion of their GED, students are offered full-time employment by Pierce working on the manufacturing of custom fire apparatus. The collaborative blueprint for success fills a labor shortage and improves quality of life for individuals of various backgrounds.
