Why did you choose to study this field?
I grew up on a dairy farm and have always had a passion for agriculture. My dream is to one day own a farm and I wanted to gain more knowledge on the best way to run an agricultural business. I’ve always loved working with animals, especially cows, which inspired me to pursue the Animal Science program.
Tell us how you came to choose FVTC for your education.
I was never the best at learning in a classroom. I learn better by hands-on learning, which made me want to go to a tech school. Fox Valley Tech was one of the closest colleges, allowing me to commute and continue living at home to help my parents on our farm. I also heard good things about the Agribusiness programs from people who had already graduated from the program. I looked into the Animal Science program, and the list of classes sounded like I would enjoy taking them while learning useful skills that I would use in the industry. After I had started classes and enjoyed them, I decided to add the agribusiness program to obtain more skills in the business side of the industry.
What's been the most rewarding part of your educational journey at FVTC?
The most rewarding part is learning information that will help me in the industry in the future and now. Working while attending classes allowed me to immediately apply what I was learning to real-world situations. The knowledge I’ve gained will continue to support me throughout my entire career.
What was the most difficult part?
Adapting to the college-style classes was a big adjustment. College is very different from high school, whether it's the structure of the classes or the different schedules. It took me a week or two to get used to the changes.
What will you do on graduation day or in the future to celebrate graduation?
To celebrate graduation I will attend the Commencement Ceremony with some of my family. We will also celebrate more after with some food.
Tell us about your plans after graduation.
After graduation I plan on accelerating my progress through the industry. One day I hope to use the knowledge I gained form studying at FVTC to help me start my own business.
One last parting thought or words of wisdom to share with others.
Get involved as much as possible, on campus I was involved in the Professional Agriculture Students organization, which allowed me to meet people from all over the country who share the same interests as me. Don't take the easy path, challenging yourself will always pay off when you are learning. Don't be afraid to try new things and get out of your comfort zone.
