SkillsUSA Competition Comes to FVTC

Event provides a glimpse of future careers for middle and high school students

| By: Britten, Casey

Around 200 middle and high school students from across Wisconsin visited the Appleton campus on Friday, Feb. 16 to compete in a variety of events related to career and technical skills.

It was part of the annual SkillsUSA Regional Competition, which allows students to practice their skills before the state competition. Students from 20 different school districts attended the regional event, showing off their talents in 16 events such as machining, welding, engineering, automotive, diesel and power equipment technology.

Steve Meyer, FVTC manager of STEM education, says the competition helps get students excited about their future. “We love hosting young people on our campus so they can see how these learning experiences can lead to coming to Fox Valley Technical College in the future, to pursue all sorts of the technical degrees that we have,” he says.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce, providing educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education. The state competition will be held this April in Madison, with more than 2000 students competing.
