With the start of a new fall semester, comes the start of several new learning opportunities at Fox Valley Technical College. We’re highlighting the new way students can earn an associate degree in Funeral Service by answering five frequently asked questions about the new program. Trent Sorensen, associate dean of Service, provides the answers.

What is the Funeral Service program all about?

This shared program prepares individuals to be licensed funeral directors and embalmers.  General education courses are completed at FVTC, and students will attend Milwaukee Area Technical College for the program specific courses.  Once accepted into the program, students will be immersed in all facets of the funeral profession.

Why did FVTC decide to add this program now?

There is a shortage of funeral service programs in Wisconsin and the industry needs employees. Milwaukee Area Technical College has provided a unique arrangement for us to partner with it on this degree.

Who should consider exploring this program?

Someone who is compassionate, dedicated and creative while being focused on end-of-life planning would be a great fit for the program.

What kinds of jobs are available with this associate degree?

Funeral director, embalmer

What is the earning potential for this career area?

The mean hourly wage in Wisconsin for an embalmer is $28.34.
