Five FAQs: New Degree in Surgical Technology

With the start of a new fall semester, comes the start of several additional learning opportunities at Fox Valley Technical College. We’re highlighting the new Surgical Technology associate degree by answering five frequently asked questions about the new program. Barb Tuchscherer, department chair of allied health, provides the answers.

What is the Surgical Technology program all about?

The role of the Surgical Technologist is to provide quality patient care while preparing the operating room for surgical cases. You'll help maintain a sterile environment and remain next to the patient during the entire surgery. You will pass surgical instruments to the surgeon and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.

Why did FVTC decide to add this program now?

Community hospitals and surgical centers reached out to FVTC, identifying a need for this worker. A needs assessment was conducted, which confirmed the need for the FVTC district. In addition to hospital operating rooms, there are many new outpatient and free-standing clinics providing surgical services who need this worker.

Who should consider exploring this program?

A successful surgical technologist will possess strong communication skills, has a strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail, possesses manual dexterity and fine motor coordination, and performs accurately and efficiently under pressure.

What kinds of jobs are available with this associate degree?

This degree can lead to many jobs: operating room surgical technologist, OB technician, ER technician, dental center technician, and office surgical technician, just to name a few.

What is the earning potential for this career area?

The average starting salary in this area if $36k-47k.
