Why did you choose to study this field?

No matter what uncertainty I felt while choosing a field to study, I knew I wanted to impact others’ lives. I have struggled with my own mental health for years and I wanted the chance to show others the amazing parts of life that I have grown to love. I ultimately chose to study Substance Use Disorder Counseling so I could be a supportive figure in the lives of those who need support so desperately.

Tell us how you came to choose FVTC for your education.

This was not the college that I started out at originally and it wasn't even a possibility in my mind. However, when I found my mental health suffering in the place I was, I knew it was time for a change. FVTC is well known for its welcoming environment and amazing programs, so I was quick to start looking at the courses offered when I was looking for something different. This is a choice that changed my life and I can't imagine not experiencing this wonderful opportunity.

What's been the most rewarding part of your educational journey at FVTC?

The most rewarding part of this journey has been meeting my peers in my program. Within SUDC, we are required to sit in a circle and talk about our feelings and life experiences. This may sound uncomfortable and it was, but I have never felt closer to a group of people. The friends that I met in my program are friends that I will hold for a lifetime.

What was the most difficult part?

In March 2021, my great aunt passed away and she was a very influential person in my life. I still can't imagine life without her and during the time of her passing, I struggled to keep myself afloat. But where there is hurt, there is also light, and the friends I made at FVTC rallied around me in a way that I never thought possible. In one of my darkest moments, I was able to stand tall thanks to my peers and that's an experience I will never forget.

What will you do on graduation day or in the future to celebrate graduation?

After celebrating with family and friends, I will travel out of state with my dog to find a new adventure. I'm not quite sure where I'll end up, but I'm going to relax and see more of what this world has to offer for a few days. College is over, it's time for some new memories.

Tell us about your plans after graduation.

I will be working as a Substance Abuse Counselor in a residential treatment facility in Oshkosh. Not sure where my career will take me from there, but I'm happy to start there!

One last parting thought or words of wisdom to share with others.

Life is not always pretty and we may not enjoy certain parts of our journey, but that journey is ours to travel. There will be darkness, but there will also be light. Never lose hope and remember to enjoy the ride. Every day you try your best is a day you will succeed.
