Hunter Peterson will provide the student address at the FVTC Spring 2022 Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 15.

While obtaining a GED high school credential at Fox Valley Technical College, Hunter Peterson fell in love with the college and quickly recognized they wanted to continue their education at FVTC. Having navigated adversity throughout their childhood, Hunter chose to pursue an associate degree in Human Resources. Hunter’s career goal includes advocating for safe and inclusive work environments while supporting marginalized communities.

Hunter has been involved in the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapter at FVTC and plans to take the SHRM certification exam this summer. They are currently working in the Human Resources field as a recruiter with an Oshkosh nonprofit agency dedicated to providing care and services to individuals who need acute care, including those with disabilities and special needs. Hunter has been accepted at Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio where they will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources.

Hunter credits FVTC instructors for being mentors and advisors in helping them navigate their career path. Hunter also credits the WIOA Program/The Brighter Star Scholarship, which helps former foster youth who have aged out of the program.

Why did you choose to study this field?

I chose to study Human Resources so I can be a voice for those who cannot speak on their own, and to make a difference for those in my organization by giving them a safe and inclusive workplace. I truly just want to help others!

Tell us how you came to choose FVTC for your education.

I actually obtained my GED through FVTC, and it was such a welcoming environment that I decided to keep going with my education. I hope that Franklin University, where I plan to continue on to get my bachelor’s degree, has a similar atmosphere as Fox Valley Tech.

What's been the most rewarding part of your educational journey at FVTC?

The most rewarding part has to be where I am right now; I never thought I would make it this far. I spent my youth in the foster care system, so the fact that I am succeeding in my studies and my personal life is just a full-circle moment. I am about to graduate and continue on with the next chapter of obtaining my bachelor’s degree!

What was the most difficult part?

The most difficult part was transferring from in-person to online learning. The lack of human connection was a problem when it came to making friends, but it is something that has gotten better with time!

What will you do on graduation day or in the future to celebrate graduation?

I am very excited to celebrate graduation with some close family and friends. I have never had a graduation party before so this is very special to me. I am happy to celebrate this achievement with those who have supported me along the way.

Tell us about your plans after graduation.

I plan on continuing my education for a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources with Franklin University. I am excited to learn more and expand the knowledge I have in my field of study.

One last parting thought or words of wisdom to share with others.

The best words of wisdom I could give to someone is to be who you are and let those passions drive you to your success. If you have the right mindset anything is possible!
