Culinary Arts students attend Taste of Catalonia: Culinary Masterclass partnered with Catalan Food US

Culinary Arts students explored Catalonian culinary traditions without leaving campus.

Fox Valley Technical College invited Culinary Arts students to experience the rich flavors and traditions of Catalan cuisine through the Taste of Catalonia: Culinary Masterclass partnered with Catalan Food US.

Chef Alba Sunyer, who is known for her expertise in Catalan cuisine, guided students through the hands-on process of preparing “Pa Amb Tomàquet,” a dish that embodies the essence of Catalonia.

For students, this first-of-its-kind masterclass offered a rare opportunity to explore the flavors, techniques and ingredients that make Catalan cuisine so distinctive.

“International foods may be incredibly simple, but their complexities are often articulated in carefully chosen ingredients and specific techniques,” explains Chef Mike Balistrieri, Culinary Arts department chair at FVTC. “As students graduate and move into their careers, these additional “tools” provide them with an expanded library of knowledge that will serve to influence their own style of cuisine.”

Chef Alba aims not only to educate but also to inspire culinary innovation and
appreciation for Catalonia's rich gastronomic heritage.

“Understanding the cultural relevance of food provides a story and context as to why it is important and how it brings a community of people together,” explains Chef Mike. “Learning never ends in the culinary field, and we were incredibly fortunate to collaborate with Chef Alba as she shared her passion for the food of Catalonia and its importance to the culinary world.”

This masterclass brought Catalan traditions to life at FVTC, providing students with not only a new recipe but also a deeper understanding of the cultural significance and creativity that shape Catalonia's celebrated cuisine.
