Jessica Thiel, Editor of Insight Publications, has been named the recipient of the Fox Valley Technical College 2022 Outstanding Alumni Award.

A 2016 graduate of the Professional Communications program, Jessica earned the award for demonstrating the value of technical education through career advancement, community service, continued personal and educational growth, and support of the Wisconsin Technical College System.

Jessica returned to school after taking time off from her journalism career to raise her family. “I came to FVTC in a state of life change and self-doubt,” she says. “I had lost confidence in myself and needed to refresh my skills. FVTC provided me the perfect opportunity to do so.” She chose the Professional Communications program to strengthen her bachelor’s degree in journalism.

As a Fox Valley Tech student, Jessica excelled academically and served as a professional role model and mentor for fellow students. She also gained practical experience working as a communications intern in the FVTC Marketing department.

Upon graduation, Jessica joined Insight Publications as a reporter, and in 2018 was promoted to Editor of Insight on Manufacturing and Assistant Editor for Insight Publications. Three years later, in October 2021, she was named Editor of Insight Publications.

Jessica advocates for technical education and FVTC through her writing, enthusiastically sharing her journey as a returning adult student whenever she can. She also serves as a member of the Advisory Committee for the Professional Communications program, mentors current students and employs student interns.

In addition to her career achievements, Jessica volunteers her time for several area organizations. She serves on the board for the Fox Cities Book Festival where she uses her marketing and social media skills to help the organization extend its reach and raise money. She volunteers at her sons’ school district and produces the district newsletter. Several times each year, she makes meals for the COTS men’s shelter. Professionally, Jessica serves on the communications task force for the NEW Manufacturing Alliance, works closely with New North, Inc. and leads the editorial process for creating the United Way Fox Cities annual campaign publication.

“My education set me up with the skills, education and confidence I needed to transition into my career,” Jessica says. “When I walked across the stage at commencement, I felt such pride and a great sense of accomplishment, especially as my sons got to witness their mom work hard for something and achieve her goals.”
