“It has to be in your heart, in service, that you put service before self and we saw that; it was the ultimate sacrifice.”

Tim Franz, an FVTC fire protection instructor, joins the nation in a time of reflection as we prepare to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Tim, who was Oshkosh’s fire chief during 9/11, recently contributed to a story by WBAY-TV which looked back on this time in history.

Tim reflected not only on the day itself, but also how lessons learned that day are being shared with students in FVTC’s Fire Protection program.

“What it’s really important for them to know, and we had the discussion this morning, about how to overcome adversity in the challenges of this job, that it’s got to be in your heart, in service, that you put service before self,” Tim says. “And we saw that; it was the ultimate sacrifice, that those New York City firefighters knew that day, when they were heading in, that they weren’t sure that they were going to come back out again. But, they put themselves in harm’s way to save other people’s lives.”
