Mary Downs, executive director of the Fox Valley Technical College Foundation and Community Relations, was named 2017 Janet Berry Volunteer of the Year recipient as part of the region’s annual Celebrating Our Volunteers initiative.
In the spirit of the award, Downs was recognized for her leadership in helping bring increased mental health resources to the community. Many of those resources encompass greater support mechanisms and treatment options for area nonprofit organizations that serve individuals dealing with mental health situations. One of those agencies is NAMI Fox Valley, where Downs currently chairs the organization’s board of directors.
The award, sponsored by the Post-Crescent, recognizes an individual or couple for exemplary volunteerism through one or multiple acts that have made the Fox Cities a better place to live. Downs will receive the award on May 2 during the annual Celebrating Our Volunteers Gala at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in downtown Appleton, along with recipients representing other awards categories like youth volunteerism, education, mentorship, and health care, to name a few. Typically more than 1,000 people attend the annual event.
