GED / HSED Information 

2002 GED Series Close-out!

Starting in 2014, there will be a new GED® test. The current version of the GED® test is expiring at the end of 2013 and your scores will expire too if you don’t finish and pass the test by then. Finish your testing by December 13, 2013 so you won’t have to re-take and re-pay the parts you’ve already passed. Get started on the life you deserve!

If you have not completed and passed all five GED® tests by December 13, 2013, you will be REQUIRED to re-start testing with Next Generation Assessment that begins in January of 2014. Scores WILL NOT carry-over into January 2014. All new fees would apply for the new series of tests. Due to the state deadline, the Writing test should be taken first, not last.

If possible, please make all necessary arrangements to complete testing well prior to that time. Spaces will become limited (due to high demand) and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. All dates listed above are final, no exceptions.

There are a variety of ways for an individual to earn a General Education Development (GED) Certificate or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).  An orientation and intake session must be completed prior to GED/HSED testing. Preparation is available through FVTC's Adult Basic Education (ABE) program.

  • If you have completed the First Steps to Success Orientation & Intake Session OR you are transferring from another test site, please contact the Assessment Center at (920) 993-5139 or Assessment@fvtc.edu 

The FVTC Assessment Center is an official GED/HSED testing center that must meet criteria mandated by federal and state regulations. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction will issue GED Certificates or High School Equivalency Diplomas to adult residents who have not graduated from high school, provided they meet the necessary requirements of the GED/HSED program. 

The "Starting" Process (for GED and HSED candidates alike):

Complete the following steps in order for Appleton:

  • First, stop in and pay the $16 ABE First Steps to Success Assessment Fee at Enrollment Services, Entrance 10
  • Second, stop in room A170b (please see map) to attain your TABE Test Ticket
  • Third, go to the Testing Center, room A171/173 and take the TABE (Testing of Adult Basic Education) test.  (You DO NOT have to schedule an appointment to take the assessment test.  Please stop in room A171/173 during these testing center times below and allow 2 1/2 hours to complete the TABE test):

First Steps to Success - Appleton Campus Summer 2013 Orientation Sessions

At the GED/HSED ABE First Steps to Success Orientation you will discuss:  

  • TABE test results
  • Career interests, aptitudes and goals
  • Options for completion of a GED or HSED
  • Plan of action to complete the Certificate or Diploma
  • Options for preparing for tests

Eligibility:

To begin the "starting" process, the student must be 18 years of age and not enrolled in high school.
To begin testing, the student must be 18 1/2 years of age OR the student's high school class must have already graduated.

Fees:

  • Orientation ($16 assessment fee required)
  • $100 fee required at the first test date of the 5 GED tests

HSED Options:

An HSED can be earned five different ways in Wisconsin. These are referred to as P.I.5.05, P.I.5.06, P.I.5.07, P.I.5.08, and P.I.5.09. The first option, P.I.5.05, meets the needs of the majority of students seeking an HSED. The procedures for completion of the different HSED options are:

  • P.I.5.05 – Pass the five GED tests and meet the requirements in civic literacy, health, and employability skills.
  • P.I.5.06 – Earn at least 22 high school credits including four in English, three in social studies, two in math, two in science, and one-half in health. 
  • P.I.5.07 – Earn 24 post-secondary credits including a credit in each subject in which you did not complete the high school credits required, except physical education.
  • P.I.5.08 – Present a foreign diploma or degree and meet a citizenship requirements. 
  • P.I.5.09 – Complete a state approved program through coursework designed to provide knowledge and skills that are expected to be taught in the courses required of high school graduates, including employability skills, civic literacy, and excluding physical education.
    • Students who choose to earn an HSED through any of these options must meet the state eligibility requirements before starting. After completion of any of these five options, a High School Equivalency Diploma is issued from the State of Wisconsin.

GED Option:

What does GED stand for?

GED stands for General Education Development. It is a CERTIFICATE issued by the State of Wisconsin once a person has completed certain requirements outlined by the State.

What are these requirements?

  • Attend a counseling session or sessions with a trained professional from FVTC.
  • Prepare for each of the five tests.  Take the tests at an Official Testing Center.
  • Pass each of the tests and accumulate the required standard score total.

Who takes the GED Tests?

  • About 850,000 adults take the tests each year
  • More than 10,000,000 adults have earned a GED in the past 25 years

What type of tests must I complete?

There are five tests, which include:

  • Literature/Reading
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Writing/English
  • Mathematics
