If you enjoy solving problems and have a strong work ethic, this might be a good career fit for you. Industrial electricians maintain and repair many different types of electrical equipment. In addition, you will install and modify electrical equipment on motors, transformers, generators, controls, instruments, lighting systems and power distributors. You’ll learn how to use devices like test lamps, volt-ohm meters and oscilloscopes, and will gain skills working from blueprints, drawings and diagrams. You’ll also learn to make mathematical computations to determine the current carrying capacities of electrical wire and equipment. Other skills for this career include troubleshooting AC and DC drives and programmable logic controllers. This program requires you to first be employed and involves four years of on-the-job and classroom instruction.
